Having “the talk” with your child

Talk to you child about travelling alone
There comes a time in every NYC parents life when its time for the talk. Traveling alone on the subway and/or bus.
This literally landed on my lap yesterday as I was taking a bus to a local appointment.
However, this topic is not a new one for me. Being a native New Yorker, the process was more of a gradual process of me going everywhere with my Mom and Grandma, so by the time it was time to go solo. I was fine.
Colleagues have asked me when is the right age for their kid to use public transportation. The answer is that there is no right answer. Most kids in my day tended not to travel along until middle school age. Its ultimately up to the parent(s)
Nowadays, little ones in elementary and pre-school have to travel miles due to the jungle that is now the NYC public school system. Most friends have told me that applying to a elementary school today is as stressful as applying to college, but let me not get too off the track.
So what’s your opinion?
