So sugary sweet to look at that it might actually make your teeth twinge, Vivi is the place to go for good bubble tea in Chinatown that won’t hurt your wallet. Their bubble-gum pink store front along with their princess-skull logo vividly stands out on Bayard Street; the small tea and snack shop essentially embodies quirky cuteness. Currently outside the door is a giant Homer Simpson statue, making it equally hard to miss. Once inside, you’re greeted by mannequins of Jack and Sally from Tim Burton’s film “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, who are more often than not adorned with drink specials. Although there isn’t much room for seating and the place can get rather crowded, the staff is very friendly and efficient. Besides traditional milk and flavored bubble teas, they also make slushes. Snackwise, they carry eclectic Asian fare such as puddings, cereal, (spelled serial on the menu), yogurt, jellies, popcorn chicken, fried yam, and thick toast.
More likely than not you’ll want to make a habit out of stopping by here once you discover it, so you’ll want to ask for a VIP card. With every drink you get, you receive a stamp, and after 5 drinks you receive one free drink, and then 20% off all of your drinks after that! I’ve been there several times and have nothing negative comment to say other than to stay away from the Sour Plum flavor. My friend reached the free drink on her card and offered it to me, so on a whim I tried the unfamiliar flavor. It tastes strangely like barbecue sauce. Nevertheless, I highly recommend that any trip to Chinatown include a stop here.
