Big Wong King
by valerief
Last Thursday night, my friend T invited me out in Chinatown. He instructed me to meet him at Big Wong. Initially, I thought this was a joke. However, when I arrived, I deduced that the owner must either have a wry sense of humor or not be too savvy about the art of adult movie naming.
This is a no-frills eatery on Mott Street, but the food is cheap and tasty. The wontons in the large serving of wonton soup were great, and the beef chow fun and seafood with crispy noodles were quite good. I especially enjoyed the fried rice; it seemed to have a distinct flavor without too much grease. Note to vegetarians: the kitchen ran out of tofu, so the veggie crispy noodles were lacking complete protein. For five people, the bill came to 10 bucks each.
In short, if you’re having a Chinese food craving but not necessarily for dumplings, congee, or otherwise exotic fare and are low on cash, this is your place. Look for the big yellow sign with the double-meaning name.
