Circles Around the Competition

by jenniferw

Visiting some old haunts in Brooklyn last Saturday, I found myself drawn towards 3rd Avenue when it came time for lunch. My favorite pizza place had closed down, much to my dismay (R.I.P. Lento’s!), so I was forced to satisfy my craving elsewhere. It was then that my father and I re-discovered a spot we had not been to for a few years. On the corner of 3rd Avenue and Bay Ridge Ave. is one of several restaurants around the borough called ‘Circles’. Famous particularly for pita sandwiches and wraps, in fact, it was here that many Brooklynites were first introduced to pita bread, and to which the name of the restaurant refers. It was rather late for lunch, being almost three in the afternoon, so we were invited to seat ourselves, navigating a warren of little rooms eclectically decorated, mostly with Matisse in a carnival of colors. We chose a table by the windows facing 3rd avenue, next to an exposed brick wall upon which hung a large gilded mirror. The hanging plants adorning the ceiling and the subdued natural lighting lent an air of relaxation to the otherwise energetic atmosphere.

I remembered from previous experience that the Thai dishes were absolutely delicious, but I knew that I wouldn’t be able to eat dinner if I attempted the spicy pasta with chicken and calamari that I had been eyeing greedily. Instead, I chose to go with the place’s namesake, and decided upon a Tuna Melt Pita. My pita was split in half so that I had two crispy circles on my plate, each topped with tuna, Muenster cheese and 3 slices of tomato. I’m very glad that I didn’t order the large entrée, because I could barely finish even this! My father went for an English burger, which was a cheeseburger on an English muffin, with French fries and a side-salad. A stolen bite from his burger also proved to be high quality, and the fries were perfect. I’m normally not very into fries, but I could have easily eaten all of these if I had the mind to.

For lunch or dinner, Circles is certainly the place to be if you want both food and ambience that will stick in your memory.
