The Story of Shop By Subway

Picture it… December 29, 2000
In less than 24 hours, the New York City area was in for a major snowstorm.

People are hurrying to get their errands done, returning unwanted gifts, getting forgotten ones or par-taking in some serous bargain hunting.

Overnight, the snow falls and the temperature does with it. When all was said and done, over a foot of snow (12 inches) accumulated and the temperature was at a chilling 13 degrees.

The next day, my mother wakes me up (by calling) and requests that I go out to get an item she forgot to get. Since I am only a block away from the subway station and lived on a major artery “road”, there was no way I could get out of it.

The snow had lost its pristine quality and not all the roads were suitable for traveling. The temperature rose to 22 degrees, but it felt more like 2 degrees.

I started to wonder how I could minimize my exposure to the elements (the sold, slush and mush.)

This is the point when Shop by Subway was born.

Back in 1888, a similar storm also affected our fair city. That storm helped to inspire the New York City Subway system as we know it today.

By creating this resource, I hope to not only take the dreams of those pioneers to the next level, but to also make shopping, eating and other services bearable, convienient and easy to get to, for all of us who use the subways of New York City.

So better late than never…let’s get to shopping!
